The ex-alumni association started with a reunion dinner in March 2006 and other events will follow. An electronic newsletter will be set up and sent to all past residents.
Most of you are well aware of the refurbishment of Coniston happening at the moment. This project is being undertaken by the Ashley Educational Trust (AET). AET was set up in 1978 to promote educational projects which foster a greater appreciation of personal freedom and responsibility along with an effective concern for others. It encourages young and old alike to volunteer their time and skills for service projects and provides opportunities to help increase their social awareness.
We are currently raising funds for AET so that they can continue their work in and around Manchester. As a past resident, well-wisher or beneficiary of Coniston Hall, you will be well aware that Coniston is a great place where one can feel at home in an environment of mutual concern and friendship. To keep Coniston moving forward, we need your financial help. Every penny contributed is a big Help!
AET has also set up links with Monkole Hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The hospital, opened in 1991 serves three districts whose half million people are refugees from DR Congo’s recent years of civil war. At the moment Monkole is equipped to carry out 350 surgical operations a year, which falls far short of demand. The hospital has very little space for women and children, who are particularly endangered in this under-developed country. AET, with the help of Coniston’s students, is trying to raise funds for a Mother and Child wing which will consist of a ward with 130 beds, a surgery section, and a department for complementary medicine.
