Toaday Dr Francesca Wheeler MBE Cphys FlnstP gave the final installment of the science master classes on Communication and Wave phenomena. Further information on similar activities in Manchester can be found in the Institute of Physics newsletter at: http://www.iop.org/activity/branches/North_West/Manchester_and_District/Newsletter/file_38521.pdf
Today, we had yet another fantastic session of the Science Master Classes with Dr. Francesca Wheeler. Tis session dealt with the Manchester University and the historical development of the understanding of atomic structure. We also discussed CERN, what has been achieved there and what is still to be found. After refreshments there was a discussion on the merits of a big experiment like the one at CERN versus the huge monetary investment.
Today the Science Master Classes have finall begun! Our first session was a short historical introduction to explain why 2009 is a year to celebrate the achievements and advancements made in the field of astronomy. This was followed with a presentation on cosmology, the big bang theory, the expanding universe and the facts supporting it. After the break there was a question and answer session, when students voiced their own opinions not only on the topics presented but many others related.
Here at Coniston Hall, we have started a series of Science Master Classes. The aim of these master classes is to give students in years 12 and 13 an opportunity to discuss topical and relevant areas of the science curriculum, in an informal and friendly atmosphere. The classes are given by Dr Francisca Wheeler MBE CPhys FInstP, who was Head of Physics at Withington Girls’ School and Ampleforth College.

Coniston prides itself in offering a wide range of cultural activities that broaden students’ perspectives and give them insights into new fields of knowledge. Throughout the year the following are offered:
Guest Speakers
Medical Ethics seminars
Lectures coordinated by Dr Maria Marco. They are aimed at students who wish to obtain a deeper knowledge of ethical issues.
Philosophy seminars
Talks on Philosophical Anthropology, History of Philosophy, Ethics and Metaphysics.
International Evenings
Informal gatherings where students shared with each other the music, food, and culture of their home countries.

For those who are interested Coniston also offers Christian formation. The religious formation is entrusted to Opus Dei, a Personal Prelature of the Catholic Church. Opus Dei helps ordinary men and women find holiness in their everyday work and family life. In Coniston, this means helping students discover a deeper meaning in their studies and the richness of the Catholic faith
UNIV Conference in Rome
Every year students at Coniston have the opportunity to take part in the well known UNIV university congress in Rome. Since 1968, the Institute for University Cooperation –ICU– has organized the annual International UNIVersity Congress to encourage the thoughts and initiatives of students regarding key issues, in order to shape the future of our world. The congress features internationally recognized speakers, along with papers, posters and videos selected by the Scientific Committee from students all over the world.
Students from Coniston have attended the congress since 1994 and taken part, alongside 1000 other students from all over the world, in the final session in Rome.
Development Conference and Careers Fair
Students at Coniston have participated in the writing competition and Conference organized by People First Society and Ashwell House in London. The Conference was sponsored by Unesco and the World Bank and we hope to bring it to the north in the next year or so.
